Markt Square & Belfort
The beating heart of Bruges and one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. The Belfort tower rises 83 metres above the square and leans about one metre to the east — something most visitors never notice. Climb its 366 narrow stone steps for a breathtaking panoramic view over the rooftops, canals, and on clear days, all the way to the Belgian coast. Fun fact: the 47-bell carillon at the top still plays every quarter hour, and if you're on the stairs when it sounds, you'll feel the vibrations in your chest. After your climb, reward yourself with a fresh Belgian waffle on the square.

Minnewater Lake
Despite its romantic nickname 'Lake of Love,' the name actually comes from the old Dutch word 'Minne,' meaning inner harbour — it has nothing to do with romance. In the 13th century, ships docked here to unload goods when Bruges was one of Europe's most powerful trading cities. Today, swans glide peacefully across the water. Legend says Emperor Maximilian of Austria ordered the citizens to keep swans on the lakes forever as punishment for beheading one of his advisors. The park around the lake is one of Bruges' loveliest spots, connecting directly to the Begijnhof — a UNESCO World Heritage site founded in 1245.

Chocolate Trail
Bruges is home to over 50 chocolatiers, making it Belgium's undisputed chocolate capital. The city's love affair with chocolate dates back centuries, when Bruges was a major trading port importing cocoa from the New World. Don't miss The Chocolate Line on Simon Stevinplein, run by the eccentric Dominique Persoone — he once created a chocolate snorting device for a Rolling Stones afterparty. Fun fact: real Belgian chocolate must use cocoa butter, never vegetable fat — if a shop can't tell you that, keep walking. For a deeper dive, Choco-Story museum traces 4,000 years of chocolate history and includes tastings.
